Surprise! Fidgets Part 2 & InnovAID’s first ever guest post!

I’ve never considered having someone else write Take AIM but when the opportunity arose, wrapped up in a bow, figuratively speaking, who am I to say no?
 
Below is the helpful information that Andrea Wuetherick, OT, emailed after reading the last newsletter.
 
I found it very interesting and I think you will too.

Andrea writes:
 
“I think some kids need “multi-sensory” fidgets…in addition to the tactile adding in a visual, auditory (as annoying as that can be!), or olfactory component.  This can help them become more engaged with fidgets if the more traditional ones that are tactile and/or fine motor manipulatives aren’t holding their interest.   If they are seeking oral then it should be an oral fidget.
 
Also some kids do well if there is a “thinking” or problem solving component added to the fidget…think Rubik’s Cube (or our new Human Cube) but in varying degrees of difficulty to be suitable for the individual.  The little girl in your newsletter’s photo is concentrating to put the links together so that is another great example!  If kids are trying to regulate when something they are thinking about is bothering them, adding in that cognitive component can be really useful.”
 
In other words, two (or more) might be better than one.
 
As is so often the case when trying to understand what is going on within a child: observe and try. That could probably be called the sensory two-step – a dance that is performed by many professionals and parents every day.

 Action Ideas 
1. Create a list of activities your child enjoys. Maybe complicate the activity by adding another sensory experience or creating the need to think.

2. Too much of a good thing is still too much. It might swing into overload quickly.

3. Re-introduce an old fidget items but change its use or add something to it. 

4. Encourage the use of all senses. For example,touch, smell, see and even taste a flower. Of course, that only applies to edible varieties.

5. Take a peek at some of our new products. More are on the way!
